Top Safe Driving Tips for Summer 2018

By August 14, 2018January 11th, 2023No Comments

This summer keep yourself and others safe on the road. Driving during the summer has its own set of challenges to be aware of. Summer rain and scorching heat can affect driving conditions. Being aware of the dangers that could be presented is just the first step in being safe. Use these tips to stay safe while driving:

Do an Air Conditioning Check

When it’s hot out, having a working AC can make a big difference. Serious summer heat can be dangerous to those more susceptible. Make sure that young children, pets, and the elderly are in a temperate environment while on the road.

Check Fluid Levels

In the summer, it’s essential to make sure that your car fluid levels are full. Check things like the coolant, oil, transmission, power steering, and windshield washer fluids. If any of them need to be refilled, do it sooner rather than later. You don’t want to get caught with a problem on the highway because of neglected fluid levels.

Double Check Tire Pressure

Now’s a good time to check your tire pressure. Under-inflated tires can lead to tire failure. Inflate or deflate your tires to the correct tire pressure. The correct tire pressure can be found in the car’s owner’s manual. If your car does not have the correct tire pressure it you may end up using more gas.

Watch Out for Others on the Road

Cyclists, motorbikes, and joggers are more likely to be out this time of year. Be sure to stay alert and watch out for them. If you pass bikes, give them 3 feet of room while passing. Do not pass them if it is unsafe. Wait until it is safe to pass. If pedestrians are attempting to cross the road, yield to them and wait until they reach the other side to continue driving. Be extra attentive while driving past schools or neighborhoods where there are more children around.

Be Careful of Summer Rain

A summer storm could roll around at any second. If you get caught in the rain, slow down your car. Reduce your speed and increase the distance between you and the car in front of you. Turn your headlights on for improved visibility and so that others can see you. Avoid slamming on the brakes in hard rainfall as it could result in hydroplaning. If you are uncomfortable driving in the rain, find a safe place to stop the car, like a parking lot, and wait for the rain to slow down.
