Driving in inclement weather can be challenging, even for seasoned drivers. At Encharter Insurance, we care about your safety. 1. Slow Down

Speed is a major factor in weather-related accidents. Driving slower gives you more time to react, improves visibility, and lowers stress. Aim to double the usual following distance between your car and others to avoid sudden stops or collisions.

2. Brake Cautiously

When the roads are slick, braking properly is key:

  • With anti-lock brakes (ABS): Apply steady, firm pressure to the brake pedal.

  • Without ABS: Pump your brakes gently to avoid wheel lock-up if you feel skidding.

3. Accelerate Gradually

Press the gas pedal gently to prevent your wheels from spinning. If your tires lose traction, ease off the accelerator, allow your wheels to regain grip, and then move forward cautiously.

4. Handle Skids Calmly

If you start to skid, don’t panic:

  • Stop braking and take your foot off the gas.

  • Turn the steering wheel in the direction you want to go to regain control.

5. Minimize Distractions

Stay focused on the road ahead. Avoid loud music, eating, or using your phone, as these distractions reduce your ability to react quickly.

Be Prepared: What to Pack in a Car Emergency Kit

Having a well-stocked car safety kit can make all the difference if you find yourself stranded or facing car trouble in bad weather. Here’s what we recommend:

  • Tire jack and spare tire

  • Jumper cables

  • Flashlight with extra batteries

  • Ice scraper and small shovel

  • Blankets for warmth

  • Water and non-perishable snacks

  • Basic toolset and first aid kit

Think Ahead

Before heading out, always ask yourself if your trip is absolutely necessary. Sometimes waiting for conditions to improve is the safest choice.
