Making sure that your home is safe for your family and any guests is important. Not only will it make visitors feel welcome, but you are also preventing accidents before they happen. Many accidents are preventable. The last thing you want is someone to slip and fall and get injured. It can ruin a fun gathering, and it can be costly to you and others. Here are some easy ways to make your home safer!

Add railings to stairs

Whether it’s a few steps or a whole flight, make sure that your stairs have a railing. It can prevent falling down the stairs. It is an easy way to help protect those who live in your home or those who come to visit. If you live in colder climates, a railing can prevent slipping and falling on icy steps.

Make sure walkways are clear

Make sure all walkways and driveways are clear. If you have just experienced snowfall or other icy conditions, add salt or dirt to help reduce slippery conditions. Otherwise, remove any tripping hazards or other obstacles. If someone is not paying attention, it’s easy to run into something.

Make sure rugs are secure

Adding in a grip underneath your rugs can prevent slipping and sliding. Not only is it annoying to constantly adjust your rug, but a slippery rug may lead to a fall. Prevent falls by securing your rug with some sort of griping material.

Add an alarm system

Having an alarm system not only gives you some peace of mind, but it can also keep your family and belongings safe. Alarm systems can deter burglars, and notify the authorities of a break-in. Though it may not always seem necessary, taking preventative measures like putting in alarm system can make a difference in the future. Learn more about alarm systems here.

Add proper lighting

Having lighting fixtures outside and inside is important for your home’s safety. Especially at night, it can be hard to see hazards. By adding in lighting in dark areas, you will be helping others stay safe. If you have a pool, make sure the area around it has good lighting. It could be devastating to have someone accidentally fall into the pool at night.

Check existing alarms

You probably already have a fire alarm in your house, but when is the last time you checked it? Every couple of months, make sure the battery in your fire alarm is working. If not, replace the batteries to ensure your home’s safety. You should do the same to your carbon monoxide alarm. Because carbon monoxide is odorless, it can become fatal without much warning.

Keeping your home safe doesn’t need to be a huge hassle. Just keeping walkways clear and lit makes a huge difference! The little things add up in preventing an injury or accident from happening. But accidents may still occur, which is why it’s important to have home insurance in place. It’s there for when your plans don’t work. Talk to your insurance agent to make sure that your insurance will help protect you in the event of an accident.
