Distracted Driving Awareness Month: Your Attention Could Save a Life in Massachusetts

By April 14, 2025May 16th, 2025No Comments

Every day, we make hundreds of decisions behind the wheel—when to turn, when to stop, and how to react to what’s happening on the road. But in today’s world of constant distractions, it only takes a split second for everything to change.

That’s why April is recognized as Distracted Driving Awareness Month—a national effort to raise awareness about the dangers of driving while distracted and to encourage safer driving habits for everyone on the road. What Is Distracted Driving?

Distracted driving is any activity that takes your attention away from the task of driving. This includes:

• Texting or using a phone

• Eating and drinking

• Adjusting the radio or GPS

• Talking to passengers

• Daydreaming

But one of the most dangerous distractions is texting. In Mass, it’s illegal to use any electronic device while driving, unless it’s in hands-free mode. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for 5 seconds. At 55 mph, that’s like driving the length of a football field with your eyes closed.

The Impact of Distracted Driving

The numbers are sobering. In 2022 alone, 3,308 people were killed in crashes involving distracted drivers in the U.S. (NHTSA). Beyond fatalities, thousands more suffer injuries that change lives forever.

According to AAA, nearly all drivers (95%) say texting or emailing while driving is very or extremely dangerous—but 39% admit to doing it anyway. It’s a dangerous disconnect between what we know is risky and what we actually do.

It’s Not Just Teens

While young drivers are often associated with distracted driving, the truth is, drivers of all ages in MA are guilty of it. Distracted driving is a human behavior issue—not just a teen issue.

What You Can Do

This April, in Mass take time to refocus on safe driving. Here are a few simple ways to help eliminate distractions:

• Put your phone on “Do Not Disturb” mode or use driving apps that silence alerts while the car is moving.

• Know the state laws, and ensure you carry proper automobile coverage.

• Set your GPS and playlist before driving—not while the car is in motion.

• Pull over if you need to text, eat, or make a call.

• Lead by example. If you have kids or teens in the car, they’re watching how you drive. Show them what safe driving looks like.

Make a Commitment

Distracted Driving Awareness Month is the perfect time to reset your habits and make a personal pledge to drive distraction-free. Whether it’s putting the phone away, resisting that fast-food snack, or staying mentally focused on the road, your choices behind the wheel matter.

Every trip. Every time.
